On the Bricks
February 20th, 2012
Had a couple of separate conversations the last two days that got me to thinking. The first conversation started about an employer that does nice things for his employees.
My comment was, “It all comes around. When you treat people nice, good things come back to you.”
Someone in the conversation added, “It goes the other way, too.”
That gave some pause for thought. And I had to agree. The insecure, micromanaging, control freak boss or the lazy, find someone to blame boss always ends up getting their just desserts, too. It just that for the nice folk that dessert is delicious and enjoyable. For the others, not so much.
Then today someone came in my office and said he was doing some contract work for someone in town. He named the person, and then added that one of his friends used to work for this person. “He won’t get any price breaks from me,” was the last of his comments.
Ouch.
Why do we not learn this lesson? Why do we continually gossip about things that aren’t our business? Why do we say things we don’t know are true? Why do we treat people like they’re worth less than they are?
I guess it’s because we’re human, but that really isn’t a good excuse.
And, for the record, I think most people try to be good and nice. We all have bad days, but they are not supposed to outnumber the good ones.
There is one sure way to cure the gossip. I know this for a fact. Get this crud I have where you can’t talk … or rather you can talk, but only under pain. It certainly changes your standards on what is worth saying. “Where is the bathroom” ranks high, but “Did you hear about…” no longer matters in the least.
Speaking of the not feeling so spiffy, Rick Roberts called me on the phone and when he heard, or actually could hardly hear, my voice, he grew concerned. “Are you home? Do you need anything? I can bring you whatever you need to the house.”
Ah, those are the people that are the majority. The ones who help their friends when they’re down and make you smile when you don’t feel like smiling. And it makes me happy to know that those good people when “get what’s coming to them” and that it will be wonderful blessings.
Let’s make it a plan to be a blessing to someone today … to family, fellow employees, neighbors, friends. They all matter and love to be reminded they do.
Oh, that comment about reminded reminds me that remembering is fun. The t-shirt quilt class starts on Feb. 21. Making a quilt out of t-shirts that bring good memories is good. Call 338-6246 if you want more information. Or better yet, email me since my voice is only come and go at best, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Main Street Shutterbugs meet on Sat. the 25th at 2. Photos are always a great way to bring back wonderful memories.
I don’t know how this ties in with memories and being reminded, but there is a fabulous Lunch and Learn on Sat., the 25th on “Interesting Things Your Cell Phone Can Do.” Brandon Romero at Epic Touch is teaching the class and it has a great lunch with it and it’s all free. Contact me if you want to go. I know … he can show you how to handle your contact list that keeps track of all those important people in your life and the calendar, which reminds you where you need to be!
Ah, all is good on the Bricks.
