Farmers Market Listed on OK Grown Website
The Guymon Farmers Market has been listed on the Oklahoma Grown website by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. The application for this designation was approved by the Main Street Guymon Board of Directors and sent in.
A part of the criteria to be accepted is that the market is required to be governed by a market manager or advisory board. The market manager must be someone who is familiar with the market; a person who participates at the market as a vendor, County Extension agent, paid manager or other person who might be involved with the market. Main Street Guymon Director Melyn Johnson is the Guymon Farmers Market manager.
“But the decisions concerning the market are very seldom made without consulting with a couple of the interested vendors,” explains Johnson. “Mary Long, Anita Helms, and Justin Johnson have all been instrumental in the positive changes that have been made with the Guymon Market this year. Mary Long has given a lot of time to the planning that has gone into play before the market ever opened. And she’s the one who is there every week!”
The advisory board for the Guymon Market is the Main Street Guymon Board of Directors.
Recently the 100% Oklahoma Grown application was sent in. Much of the criteria is similar to the other application, in addition is the market is a member in good standing with the Chamber of Commerce or operated under the county government. Main Street Guymon is a member of the Guymon Chamber.
To apply you must also have less than 20% of the market being craft and handmade items, and everything is grown in Oklahoma except counties that border another state who can bring in items from bordering states.
Recently the 100% Oklahoma Grown application was sent in and when accepted the Guymon Market will be eligible for some Department of Ag funding.
With these designations coming to the Guymon Farmers Market, it will be listed on the Oklahoma Grown website, be added the next printing of the Oklahoma Agritourism map and website, and be eligible for some funding.
“We’re doing some fun things at the market this year,” tells Johnson. “OSU Extension had a cooking demonstration one Saturday and we have a sheet of recipes for the produce that is available that week for anyone who wants one. There is also a list of garage sales that day available.” The Guymon Market takes place every Saturday morning in front of the Texas County Courthouse on the third block of North Main. It starts at 8 am and ends at 11, or whenever the vendors sell out of their produce.
Okra and cantaloupe and sweet corn should be added to the produce variety of squash, zucchini, eggplant, cucumbers, potatoes, and onions. There is also goat milk and meat, fresh eggs, and handmade dish towel and other surprise items.
